After seeing Yuji Itadori in the anime and manga watching and suffering from the deaths of his friends, fans of Jujutsu Kaisen have been going crazy for the past few months. Yuji’s mental health suffers as a result of seeing his close allies suffer and die.
He has been so overcome by the pain of loss that he has even declared his wish to die. The way the show depicts Itadori’s suffering and turns it into a dramatic scene with a song playing in the background while he hurts and places blame on himself heightens the dark theme. Many fans think that there is no other character in the anime world who has suffered as much as Yuji did.
However, there is one character from the popular manga series Berserk, who has gone through much more pain and suffering than Yuji Itadori. The character in the discussion is Guts, the protagonist of Berserk, and his pain and suffering in the series are far more painful than Yuji Itadori’s in Jujutsu Kaisen.

When a curse struck his school and Yuji was forced to eat one of Ryomen Sukuna’s fingers to become a cursed sorcerer, his entire life was turned upside down. Although it seemed like a moment of empowerment at the time, this sealed Yuji’s doom. Since Yuji is now renowned as Sukuna’s living vessel, the traditionalist leaders of the sorcery world want him dead to destroy Sukuna along with him.
Compared to many other characters in the story, Yuji is more of a condemned criminal with a point to prove, which adds to the tragedy of his tale. Yuji has had to deal with both the curse within him and the curses outside of him in addition to witnessing the deaths of a number of his friends and allies.
Not only that, when Sukuna killed an indefinite amount of people while fighting Mahoraga, Yuji had to bear the memory and watch those people die by his own hands. This was the point where he felt that he should be the one to die. All these elements add to the suffering of the protagonist of Jujutsu Kaisen. However, it is nothing compared to what Guts had to go through in his series.
Pain And Suffering of Guts in Berserk
Known as the “Black Swordsman,” Guts is a branded vagabond and former mercenary who travels the world constantly battling his desire to follow his own goals and protect his relationships with the people he cares about.
Under a hanging tree, Guts was born from his mother’s corpse, left to die in a muck of blood and afterbirth on his own. Gambino, his father figure, sold him. He was molested sexually and controlled by Griffith who was a psychopath. He was also used as a sacrifice for Godhand, and these were just the beginning of his pain. Guts has only a few happy moments throughout his entire life; everything else is suffering.
The main lesson of Guts’ journey is that he must persevere in fighting against all the obstacles life has thrown at him. The pain Guts endured throughout his life made him primarily egocentric and antisocial; he hated people he perceived as weak and was unaffected by their suffering.
