Timothée Chalamet Says Playing Willy Wonka Was A Whole New Challenge
Timothée Chalamet is playing Willy Wonka in the latest film Wonka. He is taking over the role from such names as Gene Wilder and Johnny Dep whose portrayals have since become iconic. Chalamet had huge shoes to fill but he took up the challenge.
Talking to Vanity Fair, he claimed they this role was his most challenging one yet and the performative nature (singing and dancing) of the film was nerve-wracking and required a lot of practice and commitment. He said,
“This was the most physically challenging project I’ve ever done. I can’t say the singing and dancing comes easy. I’ve been around musical theater my whole life, and danced a little bit in high school, but this was on a different level. It’s different doing it on film.
You’ve got to keep being in the center of the frame while dancing, you’ve got to rehearse for months, you’ve got to be on for every take—take 12 and all the other takes—and dance with professional dancers, who are icing their ankles. That’s how serious they were taking it. So it was a big challenge.”
The film received positive reviews from critics and audiences. They singled out Chalamet’s performance as being the main highlight of the film. The film is posed to be another box office hit for the actor.
