Tabitha Brown Finds Freedom in Her Hair
What’s a beauty rule you swear by?
Because we're talking about hair, I'm a no-heat girl. My hair has not had heat, and it's a rule that I established for myself when I did the big chop in 2017. I chopped all my hair off and started over. I said I would not put any heat on my hair for five years.
What’s a beauty rule you think is B.S.?
That everyone needs “a little bit of makeup.” I think that's B.S. I think that we all are beautiful, and we can wear makeup to accentuate our beauty if we want to. But I think that our natural skin is beautiful. I don't think that anyone needs a full face of makeup to be beautiful.
What’s your go-to getting-ready music?
It differs! Honey, I throw on some Beyoncé. I love Beyoncé. Depending on how I feel and the event that I'm going to, I might listen to some Kirk Franklin. If it's in the evening and I'm kind of quieting down for date time with my husband, I'll throw on Anthony Hamilton for a little love music.
What’s your favorite way to take a moment to yourself?
A good walk outside, away from everybody. I love quiet time. That's how I hear myself think and also how I talk to God. I love peace and quiet, because my mind, honey, is loud. I'm a talker, so my mind be talking too! I can go outside and allow the wind to blow on me. To me, that's like God is breathing on me. To go into a quiet space, and just to be around trees and grass and hills, all of that is calming to me. I love hiking. There's no greater feeling.

Who are the women inspiring you the most right now?
It still and forever will be my mama. She passed away, but she's very much so alive inside of me. I think of her daily. She was so phenomenal with her compassion and kindness. She was a social worker, but she was also a pastor and she loved people. And every day my intention in this world is to love on people. And I always think if I can just do it about a fifth as good as my mama did it, I'm doing all right. Forever, my mama will always be one of the people who inspired me, or the one who inspires me, the most.
And then also my daughter, Choyce, because she is the best part of me as a woman. I feel like all of the insecurities I had at her age, she doesn't have, because I've raised her to be completely free and know that she's enough at all times. She shows that, and does not apologize for her decisions and how she wears her hair, how she dresses, what she does. I just admire that. I just love it. That's me now, about to be 43 next week. I'm just at the last four and a half years of embracing my full self. And she's doing that at 20. So it's definitely a family affair, honey, of who I admire and look up to.
