Biography

Career

Shina Peters’ musical career got its start when he was just a kid, performing with pals as Olushina and His Twelve Fantastic Brothers.

He learned how to play the piano by practising with his buddies and later joined Ebenezer Obey’s band. After that, he joined General Prince Adekunle’s band as a guitarist.

Hotels in Lagos, such as the Western Hotel, Palm Beach Hotel, and Executive Hotel, hosted performances by Prince Adekunle’s band. Shina Peters occasionally filled in as the lead singer for Prince Adekunle when he was unwell. He quit Prince Adekunle and started a band with Segun Adewale called Shina Adewale.

The pair, however, eventually broke up after putting out numerous albums with Segun Adewale in the 1980s.

Later, Shina Peters created his band Sir Shina Peters & His International Stars.

Ace (Afro-Juju Series 1), the debut album by Sir Shina Peters and his International Stars, was released in 1989. The album, which Nigeria’s CBS Records released, earned two platinum certifications. Juju and Afrobeat are combined musically in Ace, which Laolu Akins created. The fast-paced rhythmic pulse of the Afro juju musical genre is combined with the use of electronic synthesisers, saxophone, and guitar.

Some of the lyrics on the CD, particularly those in Ijo Shina, were quite explicit for the time. With the album, Peters won accolades for both the artist and the album of the year at the Nigerian Musical Awards. He released the album Shinamania as a follow-up to Ace, which featured the singles Oluwa Yo Pese, Omo Bo, and Give Our Women a Chance.

Again, as soon as Shinamania was released, it sold in huge quantities and was rated as one of the best-selling songs of 1989. Shortly after, he released another album, which was also a hit.

Shina Peters made a quick comeback despite his album’s negative feedback, which also hurt Shinamania and diminished its glory. Since then, his progress has stabilised and increased.

Sir Shina Peters currently boasts 16 timeless and beloved studio albums by listeners of all ages. He will continue to be respected in the years to come.

In addition to singing, Shina Peters has also appeared in some Nollywood films, including the well-known Money Power from 1982.

You can now refer to Sir Shina Peters as Bishop Shina Peters because he was consecrated as a bishop of the Cherubim and Seraphim Church in January 2021.

The Peters family has a long history in the entertainment industry. A Nollywood veteran named Clarion Chukwura and Shina Peters allegedly first connected on the 1980s film Money Powers set, where they started dating.

Clarion Chukwura and Shina Peters were unable to wed but had a child, Clarence Peters, a well-known music video producer, together.

In 1983, Sammie Ayoka Peters and Shina Peters were united in marriage. Seyi Peters and Clinton Peters are the names of the other two children born into their union. Fashion designer Toyin Lawani has also stated that she is the stepdaughter of the Afro-Juju musician. She stated this in her reality TV show The Real Housewives of Lagos.

Conclusion

Shina Peters is not without some controversies. Veteran Nigerian singer and recently ordained Bishop Shina Peters has responded to claims that Funmi Martins, a deceased Nollywood actress, birthed a child for him and that he abandoned the boy.

Martins, a well-known Nigerian actress, died in 2002. She gave birth to Damilare, her third child and allegedly the love child of the juju musician, two months before she passed away.

The allegations first appeared online after a well-known Instagram blogger claimed that the 19-year-old child, Damilare Peters, had been abandoned by his older sister, actress Mide Martins and the music star.

The charges were addressed by the Juju maestro, who has been married to Sammie since 1995, in a video published online.

He claimed that he had been absent from young Peters’ life for reasons he would not discuss but that he has vowed to be in charge of his welfare going forward.
