INDIANAPOLIS (WTHR) - National Pie Day is a great reason to dig into a slice of Indiana's official state pie.
Sugar cream pie, also known as Hoosier pie, was deemed the official state pie in 2009. According to Visit Indiana, the pie became popularized in Indiana's Amish and Shaker communities.
The American Pie Council said nearly $700 million in pies are sold in grocery stores annually.
Kelly Maucere from My Sugar Pie in Zionsville stopped by WTHR Sunrise to help celebrate National Pie Day in style. My Sugar Pie has been featured in People Magazine as the best "food gift" from Indiana.
My Sugar Pie will be hosting baking classes for anyone ages five and up. The cost is $20 per person.

My Sugar Pie is located at 40 East Pine Street in Zionsville. Their pies are also sold at St. Elmo's Steakhouse, Harry and Izzy's downtown and northside locations, J. Razzo's in Carmel, Uptown Cafe in Bloomington, and Cobblestone Grill in Zionsville.
The Denver Post reports that National Pie Day was started by Boulder, Colorado school teacher Charlie Papazian. Papazian shared and promoted his love of pies and eventually had his holiday registered with the Chase’s Book of Events.
