"My Church" Singer Maren Morris Talks Miranda Lambert, Her Debut Album Hero, and More

Listen in as we talk her song inspirations, lessons from the women before her, and yes, that striking resemblance to a certain reality-TV fan favorite.

Glamour: Important matters first: Do you ever watch The Bachelor? Because you have a striking resemblance to JoJo.

Maren Morris: OK, so I watched some of this season. I had long hair until recently, and I cut it—but not because of that! [Laughs] She’s beautiful, so thank you! I’ve had so many people say that. Before, it was Selena Gomez, but recently it’s been JoJo. And she’s from Texas too—same area!

Glamour: If they’re smart, you’d perform on The Bachelorette this season. They often have country music artists play on a date.

Maren: That’d be so fun. Us Texas gals—something in the water!

Glamour: You recently posted a photo on Instagram of you and Miranda Lambert at the ACMs in Vegas. How did you guys first meet?

Maren: Before she signed her deal and blew up, we played festivals in Texas together over 10 years ago. I started young—probably around 11. She randomly reached out to me when she heard “My Church” recently, and we reconnected. I did a songwriter round that she hosted in Nashville a few months ago. We’re both on the same label too. Her first tour was with Keith Urban, and I’m about to go on tour with Keith in June. The other night she was saying how amazing he is, so it was cool because I didn’t realize that was her first tour.

Glamour: You’re about to go on tour with Keith and Brett Eldredge. How does that happen? Does the label suggest it?

Maren: I don’t even think I had signed with the label yet or maybe I had just signed. Keith and I do have the same agent at CAA, and Keith heard my EP, but it wasn’t even on iTunes yet. Keith heard “My Church” and “'80s Mercedes” and immediately within the hour got back to our agent and wanted to know who was singing those songs and who wrote them. When our agent told him it was me, he said, “Well, I have to get her for this tour.” It happened like a movie. He just went with his gut. He didn’t have a bunch of people in his ear [telling him what to do], and it wasn’t a political [move]. It was just based off of him loving the music, and that’s so cool. The day we met was actually the day we announced the tour. I had met Brett once or twice before, but we all three announced the tour together on XM Highway. They wanted us to do a cover song, so the three of us did Adele’s “Rolling in the Deep.”
