SHEBOYGAN – Stephen Colbert’s name-drops of Sheboygan earlier this month did not go unnoticed by the city. In fact, the mayor’s office is sending him a care package.

Colbert named Sheboygan twice in jokes on “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert” June 17 and June 19, both in relation to former President Donald Trump. The first was in context of Trump’s contested comment that Milwaukee is a “horrible city” and the second was about his rally in Racine.

The first joke recalled Colbert’s own slights of Milwaukee during the 2020 Democratic National Convention, for which he completed a “Milwaukee Apology Tour” around the city.

“I learned my lesson the hard way and have since learned to appreciate Milwaukee, the eternal city,” Colbert said on the June 17 show. “The Paris of Wisconsin. Suck it, Sheboygan.”

Mayor Ryan Sorenson said the city wasn't offended by the "Suck it, Sheboygan" joke.

“It was all in good fun,” Sorenson said.

The city plans to send Colbert a care package, including a “Malibu of the Midwest” T-shirt, and invite him to Sheboygan.
