“Just how long do you want the game to be?”: Marcus Spears blasts the NFL for overtime rule change

The NFL overtime rules have been talked about a lot in recent times, especially after what happened in a couple of playoff games last season. It would be fair to say that it is a sore subject for fans of teams that were affected negatively by it. But now, with the new overtime rules, they ‘might’ not have to face a similar situation again.

The official statement confirming the changes on OT rules stated that both teams will now have the opportunity to possess the ball in overtime in the postseason. “If the score is tied after each team has possessed the ball, the next score wins. If the team kicking off to start the overtime period scores a safety on the receiving team’s initial possession, the team that kicked off is the winner,” the statement read.

So what that means is that the sudden death aspect of the NFL over time that people weren’t entirely happy about still remains. This has left fans split with many feeling that all this new rule does is delay what was happening before while some have stated that it’s actually a good thing.

Marcus Spears also had his say about the OT rule change. Spears claimed that there is no point in crying about the fact that everybody should get the ball. “When you put your eleven on defense and they put they eleven on offense, that’s an equal playing field. Overtime is supposed to be sudden death,” he claimed.

It makes me terribly upset. Now you have created a situation if a defense goes out there and shed the offense down and your team’s offense gets the football, how long do we want the game to be babyface? How long do we want it to go? You just added two more games through the regular season and I understand that this is for the playoffs,” he claimed.

But you talk about the value of the game. Let me tell you all a secret, overtime is supposed to be sudden death, that’s the whole point of overtime. Now, everybody gets a turn. Never thought I’ll see this happen,” Spears added.
