Although the book and movie are works of fiction, Jessica’s inspiration for the story was her own experiences, according to IndieWire.
Mila plays New York Times Magazine editor Ani FaNelli in the film The Luckiest Girl Alive. Ani leads a happy life in New York City with close friends and the perks of her job.
When a true crime documentarian shows up to talk about an incident from her school days, she faces her past.
There are similarities between Jessica and the Ani character beyond just trauma, despite the fact that the story being told was fiction.

Jessica, a former editor at Cosmopolitan, disclosed in 2016 that she had been gang-raped as a teenager, according to IndieWire.

She reportedly had an essay for Lena Dunham’s Lenny Letter a year after the novel was live. Which helped her deal with the trauma of the experience.
“I first learned I had been gang-raped from a therapist seven years after the incident. My literary agent came in second five years later, but she wasn’t talking about me. She was alluding to Ani, the protagonist of the novel Luckiest Girl Alive. Its inspiration is not, which I have kept a secret until today.”
