Canadian 9th seed Denis Shapovalov has been in decent form this season. After having an amazing grass court season where he reached the quarterfinal of Stuttgart Open, semifinal at Queen’s Club and reached the semifinal at Wimbledon, Shapovalov hasn’t been able to clear the opening hurdles. Despite being the top seed, he bowed out of the first round of the Swiss Open and didn’t win any matches at both Toronto and Cincinnati Masters.

He then bowed out of the third round of the US Open to Lloyd Harris in straight sets.

As for Vasek Pospisil, he has had a terrible season so far. Barring just one quarterfinal outing, he hasn’t even won two consecutive matches at any tournament he has player. In the 5 tournaments he’s played in the North American swing, he manages to secure just 2 wins and as a result has dropped out of the top 65 in the world.

In the opening round at Indian Wells, he defeated wild card J.J. Wolf in three sets 6-4,4-6,6-4 to book a date with Shapovalov in the second round.
