120Hz & HDMI 2.1 Explained

In the official Warzone patch notes, Raven Software included the following:

  • Added 120hz support for PS5
    • Requires HDMI 2.1

So, what exactly is 120Hz and HDMI 2.1? Hertz, often shortened to ‘Hz’, is a unit of frequency defined as one cycle per second. Essentially, when we talk about gaming monitors or TVs, 1Hz = 1 FPS.

This doesn’t necessarily mean you will always get 120FPS if your monitor is 120Hz, it just means that your monitor is physically capable of up 120FPS. Anything above that will simply not be visible. Of course, in games such as Call of Duty, the faster and smoother the gameplay the better.

What about HDMI 2.1? This one’s a little easier, it’s essentially just the newest version of HDMI cable. To most, a HDMI cable is just as HDMI cable, but there are different types that all have different capabilities.

HDMI 2.1 has more features and a lot more bandwidth available. This means that the cable is capable of higher resolutions and higher frame rates.

Your monitor will also be required to have a HDMI 2.1 input, it’s not as simple as plugging in a HDMI 2.1 cable to any input. But, if you have a HDMI 2.1 cable, a PS5, a monitor with a 2.1 input and 120Hz capabilities, you’ll want to make sure you’re getting 120fps on Warzone.
