How to Heal Yourself and Find Healing Items

Returnal makes it clear right off the bat: it’s going to be a challenging experience that will push even the most seasoned gamers. While the idea that you won’t need to use health items if you don’t get hit has certainly worked for high-level players with other challenging games, healing items are a necessity in Returnal.

There’s plenty of things to consider when weighing the risk/reward aspects of choice making in Returnal. Perhaps the most important consideration is your health. With very few stored healing items, players are going to need to know exactly how to heal up incase things get a little sideways.

Here’s what you need to know about healing and the many items that can heal you in Returnal.

How to Find Healing Items

Healing in Returnal can take place in two ways: through healing items or through healing buffs. There are a handful of buffs that can cause you to heal that are found randomly throughout the game. Some might give a 10% chance of enemies healing you upon their death while others might heal you if your health dips below a certain level. Healing items on the other hand, are far more predictable.

The main healing items found throughout the different biomes are called Silphium. Silphium can be found in three forms: large, regular, and small and heal you for more HP depending on the size. Finding Silphium is often inconsistent as the game generates items on the map randomly. Usually, every room or so should have a healing item or two inside.

One of the other main health items are Silphium Resin. While not directly healing you, they help increase your max HP. Collect one regular Silphium Resin per HP upgrade slot to increase your suit integrity or keep an eye out for the larger Resin which fills two slots.

There are also a handful of one time consumable HP items that can be used at any time by hitting L1 that are given at the start of every biome (excluding the first.) They can also be created in the Fabricator or found infrequently after defeating enemies.
