“He really went for it”: What Did Barry Keoghan Really Eat in Disturbing Saltburn Scene That Went Viral After Release?

Emerald Fennel’s iconic psychological thriller movie Saltburn, starring Barry Keoghan, came out last year and was considered a bit too over the top for some viewers. The movie revolves around the story of a master manipulator and psychotic murderer, Oliver Quick, portrayed by Keoghan, who manipulates a whole family into destroying themselves.

The movie had its own fair share of disturbing moments but one of the most disturbing moments came when Oliver Quick did something only a deranged person would do.

In the movie Saltburn, Oliver Quick and Felix Catton portrayed by Barry Keoghan and Jacob Elordi respectively attend the University of Oxford together. After being manipulated by Oliver, Felix invites him to his family’s country house, Saltburn to spend the summer together. One night, Oliver saw Felix masturbating in the bathtub, and he went on to drink Felix’s semen-laced bathwater as he was already lustfully obsessed with Felix.

The scene itself was a bit too disturbing but of course, Barry Keoghan did not drink semen-laced bathwater during the filming. In an interview with Business Insider, the production designer of the movie, Suzie Davies recently opened up about the details and filming of the actual scene. According to Davies, Keoghan ate “yogurt and a bit of milk and some water“. While talking about the filming of the scene, Davies said,

He did it four times and really went for it. Every one he did was a different kind of slurp. Often, when you film things like that, there are 20 people in the room. It’s quite tense. But the cast can bring something that’s so extraordinary that you can hear a pin drop. So when Barry was doing his stuff, it was amazing. He had no inhibitions.

Despite the extremely disturbing nature of the bathtub scene, the audience revealed that they felt more disgusted while watching the infamous grave scene in Saltburn.

The grave scene is arguably the most disturbing scene of the movie and it came as a surprise to everyone when Barry Keoghan revealed in an interview that this scene was improvised by him. After Felix finds out that Oliver has lied to him about his family’s past to get close to him and his family, he confronts him. Oliver goes on to confess his feelings to Felix who asks him to leave his family’s home in the morning. However, Oliver does not have any of it and goes on to poison Felix’s milk which ends up killing him.

Although he did kill Felix, Oliver is still not over his obsession with Felix and goes to visit his dead friend’s grave all alone where he gets completely naked and grinds on the grave. In a recent interview with Deadline on the Golden Globes Awards red carpet, Keoghan revealed that the disturbing scene was indeed improvised by him. He said,

“I wanted to see what Oliver would do next. I wanted to see what the next level of obsession was. And by that [I mean], I just wanted the camera to roll. Not to kind of preempt it or rehearse it and what happened, happened. It was one take, and I think it was right. It moved the story forward.”
