Guide for DuckTales Remastered - General hints and tips

Number one tip I have to share about this game: after purchasing one piece of art to satisfy the Art Aficionado achievement, DO NOT, under any circumstances, spend money until you've hit $10 million. The game does not count your money cumulatively - ie you have to have $10 million in the bank at one time to get the "The Duck Who Would Be King" achievement. After this, feel free to spend money buying art to your heart's content. I made this mistake during my playthrough, and it added several hours to my completion time.

There is a stage select screen in Scrooge's office once you've beaten the introductory level ("The Vault"), so gameplay can be non-linear. Levels are 2D sidescrollers, where you will need to complete tasks in-level, and eventually beat a boss. Once you've beaten all of the story levels, you will gain access to the final boss level via the stage select screen.

Diamonds are in-game money - little white diamonds are the least valuable, big blue and yellow diamonds are mid-level, and red diamonds (rubies) are the most valuable. Definitely go for the red diamonds when you can - levels are non-linear for the most part, so don't feel like if you've missed a red diamond you can't go back to get it. That said, don't sweat the little diamonds - you get a hefty monetary bonus at the end of each level (even if you've already completed the level before). Some diamonds are out in the open, and others only appear after you walk over a certain spot, and then you'll need to turn around to retrieve the diamond that has appeared before it expires.

Cakes and ice cream cones from Mrs. Beakley are in-game health pick ups. In most levels right before the boss, there will be a secret side area (that isn't particularly difficult to find) where you will find Mrs. Beakley and a bunch of health pick ups and 1-ups. Definitely take advantage of these.

Coins are invincibility tokens. They operate the exact same way as in Super Mario on the NES - they make you invincible for a short period of time, allowing you to blast through an area killing all enemies in your path. You'll know you're invincible by the change in music as well as by the fact that your body will be glowing.

You can only have one save file, which, on initial thought, seems a bit problematic for completing your runthroughs and collecting art at the same time. Fear not - once you've completed a runthrough on whatever difficulty you've chosen for your first playthrough, you can start a new game, and your art and money will carry over. You will lose any story progress though, so you won't be able to access the level select screen until you've beaten the first level again. The first level is extremely easy no matter which difficulty you pick though, so this shouldn't be a problem. Note that once you've beaten a level though, you won't be able to re-select it from the stage select screen until you've finished the game on whatever difficulty you're on (or until you've started a new game).

Other than that, the controls are very straightforward. cn_A is jump. Pushing cn_X or cn_B will cause you to do a pogo jump, which you can use to break blocks, push buttons, open chests, kill enemies, or traverse spikes. If you hold cn_X or cn_B, you will keep pogo jumping, and you can move around while you're pogo jumping. Just as with the diamonds, chests can also appear as you move over a space (as you play through certain levels enough times, you'll just come to know where all of the hidden chests and diamonds are). Be careful with these hidden chests - often they'll be necessary to reach a higher platform with a health pick up or with a chest on it. Don't worry if you mess up one of these jumps though - these areas are never necessary for continuing forward in the level, so you're not going to take away from the overall gameplay if you miss a one-time chest jump. When you are walking forward (not jumping), if you press cn_X or cn_B, you will do a cane swing. These are effective for breaking blocks directly in front of you, opening chests, or hitting objects into place so that you can jump on them to reach new areas.

Finally, maps are available at the start menu. The amount of information shown on the map (or if you even have a map at all) will depend on the difficulty you're playing on. This is another great reason to play the game on a lower difficulty first - you'll have more time to familiarize yourself with the lay of the land and with the level formats. You'll be able to know where important items and hidden areas are in each level before you have to go through the game at the highest difficulty (where you have no map). There are significant differences between difficulties. Check out the next page for more information about this!
