"Every Guy I've Been With Has Had a 'Problem' With My Labia"

"I had labiaplasty when I was 16 (along with a hymenectomy because I had an imperforate hymen, meaning I had almost no vaginal opening) because one of my labia was much longer than the other. My gyno was able to get it covered under my insurance because she said it could trap bacteria, causing bladder infections (which I had many of growing up)... I would also like to point out to you ladies, labiaplasty should be if your labia minora are causing you pain or infection. Don't go through it just to make your vagina pretty." —Rosenblattca

"Since a lot of women have no idea what other women's labia look like (and therefore compare themselves to unrealistic, photoshopped porn, etc.), perhaps it might be useful for you to look up the labia library." —highbury_fields

Sara Twogood, M.D., an ob-gyn at the University of Southern California Keck School of Medicine, agrees that labiaplasty is probably not necessary for aesthetic reasons, but could be useful for minimizing physical discomfort. "In some cases, women find their labia can interfere with their day to day activities, including sex. It's fairly uncommon, but labiaplasty would be a good option in this scenario," she said.

However, she added, "it's important women know surgery is an option, but I would not recommend it for cosmetic reasons only. There are surgical complications and healing considerations to every surgery, and the decision should be made after consulting with a doctor who is knowledgeable and outlines the risks and benefits clearly."

So, while you shouldn't have a labiaplasty just because a few men made rude comments about your lady bits, it's worth looking into if it's causing health issues or discomfort for you.
