Dorothy Nyong’o, who is also known as Mama Kisumu, is presently the First Lady of Kisumu County in Kenya. She is famous for being the mother of an award-winning actress, who has broken racial barriers and has the global movie industry adore her for her exploits.

Dorothy Nyong’o (nee Buyu) was born on December 22, 1957, in Maseno Mission Hospital, Kenya. She is the daughter of Laban Buyu, a retired high school Kiswahili language teacher, who is currently 92 years old, and Rosemell Buyu, a retired nurse. Her mother, Rosemell, died in a car accident on May 25, 1999.

Dorothy Nyong’o is the second child and oldest daughter of her parents. She grew up with two brothers and five sisters. At age of five, she was enrolled in Ngiya Primary School, which is adjacent to the house of the late Sarah Obama, the wife of the paternal grandfather of former U.S. President, Barack Obama.

Her father left when she was six years old to pursue higher education at the University of London. Her mother later went on to pursue a career in midwifery. For two years, Dorothy Nyong’o and Peter, her older brother, lived with their father’s sister in Kisumu Town (now Kisumu City). They attended Kisumu Union Primary School together.

When she was nine years old, her father relocated to Nairobi and started working as a teacher at Jamhuri High School after returning from his studies. Throughout the last three years of her primary education, she attended City Primary School.

She went to Pangani Girls High School, where she spent six years of her secondary school education. She headed to the University of Nairobi, Kenya, where she obtained a Bachelor of Arts in French and Political Science in August 1979. She subsequently earned a Postgraduate Diploma in Mass Communication from the University of Nairobi’s School of Journalism in 1980. he also graduated in 2009 with an Executive Master of Science in Organizational Development from the United States International University.

Dorothy Nyong’o is an expert in public relations, with over 30 years of experience. Throughout her career, Nyong’o has been an advocate for education and social justice. She has worked as a teacher, curriculum developer, and education administrator in Kenya, Mexico, and the United States. In the early 1990s, she was involved in the pro-democracy movement in Kenya and served as a campaign manager for Raila Odinga, who later became Kenya’s Prime Minister. She had also worked as a programme officer for the International Planned Parenthood Federation for 10 years before becoming a reproductive health and communications consultant for the past 20 years.

She has been a vocal advocate for cancer awareness and prevention in Kenya and has worked to improve access to cancer treatment and care for patients in the country. She serves as the Managing Director of the Africa Cancer Foundation (ACF), an organisation of which her husband, Peter Nyong’o, is the founding Chairman.

The Africa Cancer Foundation (ACF) is a charitable organisation with its main office located in Nairobi, Kenya. It was established on July 12, 2011, and it strives to achieve a cancer-free Africa by raising awareness of cancer. Under her leadership, the ACF has morphed from a pioneering organisation to a maturing one that is acknowledged in Kenya as a leading institution for cancer awareness, information, and screening over the last 10 years.

In addition, Nyong’o is also a member of the boards of directors of the Kenyan Red Cross and the Kenya Community Development Foundation. She has worked for many years in public health and community development in Africa and has held leadership positions in several organisations, including the African Medical and Research Foundation (AMREF) and the Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI).

Dorothy Nyong’o met Peter Anyang’ Nyong’o while she was a student at the University of Nairobi. They subsequently began dating and got into a relationship.

The couple got married on December 22, 1979, which is, coincidentally, the birth date of Dorothy Nyong’o. They have four biological children and one adopted daughter from Peter Nyong’o’s late sister, Judith. The names of their children are Zawadi, Lupita, an Oscar-winning actress; Wam, and Junior. They also have grandchildren courtesy of Wam and her husband, Dadi.

Lupita Nyong’o is the most famous of Nyong’o’s children. She is an accomplished actress best known for her roles in films such as 12 Years a Slave and Black Panther. In 2014, Lupita Nyong’o won the Academy Award (Oscars) for “Best Supporting Actress” for her performance in 12 Years a Slave.
