‘Did he catfish me’: Woman sends N62m to ‘millionaire’ boyfriend she’s never met

Terri, a recent guest on the popular American TV show “Dr Phil,” has transferred approximately $80,000 (N62.1m) to her virtual boyfriend before suspecting something was amiss.

Terri met “Ricardo” two years ago on Facebook Messenger.

Ricardo then persuaded Terri to invest $10,000 in Bitcoin a month after they started communicating, promising a quick return of $1 million in six months.

Terri has been giving Ricardo money ever since, with only pictures and phone calls as evidence that he’s real — but she has never received a penny from her investments.

While Ricardo claimed to be a Los Angeles native, his migration to Canada for business apparently stopped him from meeting his lady love in person.

When Terri tried to make plans to meet in person, Ricardo “always had an excuse,” she told Dr Phil.

Tammy, Terri’s sister, smelt a rat and joined Terri on the show.

“People are still telling me Ricardo isn’t real, that he’s scamming me, and that he’s not in Canada,” Terri said.

“I don’t believe them … I believe Ricardo’s real.”

Dr Phil agreed with Tammy’s scepticism and revealed “Ricardo” as a scammer by fact-checking the lie he fed Terri.

It was discovered that the man in the images Ricardo is actually another man called James, and this isn’t the first time his pictures have been used.

“I’m heartbroken,” Terri said to Dr Phil, “but I’m done.”

Dr Phil went on to remind everyone that James, too, is a victim of schemes that use his personal photos to take advantage of strangers online.

Despite her sadness, Terri was able to laugh about the situation and explain that she didn’t blame James at all.

“If I see [James], I’m not going to punch him out,” she claimed.
