Customer badly burned after hot oil spills at Midtown Chipotle – WSOC TV
CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A Charlotte woman is recovering at a state burn center after she was burned by hot oil at a Midtown Chipotle.
The woman just purchased her food and was standing near the drink counter when employees spilled gallons of hot oil on the floor, witnesses said.
Brent Donenfeld and Jason Broady were eating at the restaurant just before the incident.
"I heard her scream from when she fell into it. She got up and her clothes were torn in the back," Broady said.
"A fryer fell, hot oil, and it got on the customer," a caller told a 911 dispatcher.
An ambulance arrived and the victim was visibly shaken, witnesses said.
She was rushed to Carolinas Medical Center and was taken to the burn center at Wake Forest Baptist, according to authorities.
Eyewitness News reporter Tina Terry asked the manager what went wrong, but she refused to talk.
A source with police said a manager reported that two employees were carrying the hot oil on a broken stand before they dropped it.
A spokesman for the corporate headquarters said,
"We are extremely sorry for this unfortunate incident," a Chipotle spokesperson said. "We are very concerned that we could have allowed this to happen in one of our restaurants, and are investigating the cause so that we can understand exactly how it happened, and ensure that it never happens again."
The victim was still in the hospital Wednesday and in fair condition.
