Dangerous Driving Behaviors Contribute to Fatal Crashes

According to the Minnesota Department of Public Safety (DPS), there were nearly 400 traffic fatalities statewide in 2021, many of which occurred on high-speed roads like Highway 169. Dangerous driving behaviors that contribute to these preventable deaths include:

  • Excessive speeding - Going too fast for conditions can cause a driver to lose control and increases crash severity. The higher the speed at impact, the greater the risk of fatality.

  • Distracted/inattentive driving - Activities like cell phone use and adjusting music take a driver's eyes and focus off the road. Even brief distractions of just a few seconds can have deadly consequences at highway speeds.

  • Impaired driving - Drunk, drugged, and drowsy driving all dramatically increase the chance of a serious crash occurring.

  • Tailgating/following too closely - When a driver fails to maintain safe following distance, they do not allow enough time to react and stop before hitting the vehicle in front of them. This appears to be a factor in Sunday's fatal crash.

Tips to Drive Safely on Highway 169 and Avoid Crashes

To help reduce serious injury and fatal crashes on Highway 169 and other high-speed roads, motorists are urged to follow these safe driving practices:

  • Obey posted speed limits and adjust for conditions - Even going just 10 mph over the limit greatly increases risk on highways. Slow down in congested areas, bad weather, or limited visibility.

  • Eliminate distractions before driving - Focus only on driving and do not use cell phones. Pull over if needing to text, program navigation or attend to children or pets.

  • Drive sober and well-rested - Impaired, drunk or drowsy driving puts everyone sharing the roads at tremendous risk.

  • Allow for 3+ seconds following distance - At highway speeds, increase following distance behind the vehicle ahead to at least 4-6 seconds to allow time to react.

  • Signal lane changes and merges well in advance - Use blinkers and check mirrors and blind spots before changing lanes or merging to avoid striking other vehicles.

  • Be prepared to slow or stop suddenly - Watch ahead for sudden slow downs. Avoid tailgating so you have ample room to brake.

Family and Friends Mourn Tragic Loss of Life

For the loved ones of the Plymouth woman who was killed in Sunday's crash, the sudden loss of life is devastating. The local community has come together to offer condolences and provide support to family members as they grieve the heartbreaking traffic fatality.

Many have expressed sharing in the grief and trauma that results from such a tragic loss of life from preventable crashes occurring far too often on Minnesota roads. As the State Patrol continues to investigate the exact circumstances surrounding the chain reaction accident, the victim's family and greater Plymouth community will mourn her passing and hope measures are taken to improve safety and prevent similar terrible crashes along Highway 169 in the future.
