Champions League: Villarreal keeper, Rulli blamed for loss to Liverpool

Geronimo Rulli, Villarreal’s goalkeeper has been slammed after his shambolic performance against Liverpool in their second-leg Champions League semi-final clash on Tuesday night.

The Yellow Submarines went into the tie with a 2-0 deficit from their misadventure at Anfield last week. They had hoped the tale would be different at their home, Estadio de la Cerámica.

It seemed their dreams were back on track after they took a 2-0 lead early in the game. However, Liverpool responded with three second-half goals to derail any chance of featuring in the final of the elite competition.

Rulli had some catastrophic moments in the game leading to the three goals.

Reacting to his performance, Chelsea legend, Jason Cundy, blasted him and described him as not good enough as an understudy in the Championship, England’s second tier.

Speaking after the match, talkSPORT host Cundy said: “The goalkeeper, he’s a shocker, I’m sorry. He was at fault for four of the five goals.

“How can you go into a Champions League semi-final with a goalkeeper that isn’t good enough to be an understudy in the Championship?

“Honestly, Sam Johnstone, there’s a lot of clubs after him, he’s out of contract, he’s a better goalkeeper than what I saw tonight and what I’ve seen over the two legs.”
