Action 9 helps clear-up layaway misunderstand – WSOC TV

CHARLOTTE — When one Charlotte mother thought Christmas was ruined, she turned to Action 9.

Like most parents, Maimuna Kone wanted to buy her only child, Tyler, all sorts of toys; she even started her shopping months in advance of Christmas.

She found almost everything she wanted at two Walmarts near Independence Blvd; she put the toys on layaway, so she could pay them off more slowly and so Tyler wouldn't find them in the weeks leading up to the holiday; Kone says she also put down more $500 on the gifts.

But she lost her driver's license. So, when she went to pick up the gifts, she says Walmart wouldn't give them to her.

"I was really upset about it," Kone said. "I was just stewing, sitting there, I was crying, I was like this is unfair."

So she emailed Action 9, who contacted Walmart's corporate office, which seemed concerned and promised to look into the situation immediately. It did. The next day, a Walmart manager, from one of the two stores Kone visited, called her.

"He had everything taken care of;He was fantastic," Kone said. "He was like, 'Listen, I heard what happened. Here's how we're going to fix the problem.'"

She picked up the toys, and said Walmart even gave her $90 in gift cards for her trouble.

When you use layaway, make sure you know what you need to pick up your items, how much time you have, if there are any hidden fees, and what happens if your items go on sale in the meantime (whether you get the lower price).
