5 of the Best RPGs Available Right Now On the PS5

PlayStation 5 is still very much in its infancy, however, in just two months the console will be a year old. Despite this, there are still a bunch of excellent RPGs available on the system. Here are 5 of the Best RPGs available now.

All the games on the list are purchasable now, with many more RPGs upcoming on the system including a Knights of the Old Republic Remake, Final Fantasy XVI and Elden Ring

Additionally, there is a bunch of excellent RPGs available already on PlayStation 5 thanks to backwards compatibility with PS4. Some even have PS5 patches incoming. It is easy to forget that classics of the genre including Witcher 3, Mass Effect Legendary Edition and Persona 5 Royal are all playable right now.

Demon’s Souls

FromSoftware’s cult classic Demon’s Souls arrived on the PlayStation 5 on launch day. The title has been rebuilt from the ground up and lovingly enhanced by Sony’s Bluepoint Games for the new hardware. The game features a Cinematic Mode that runs at 4K 30fps and a Performance Mode that runs at 1440p 60FPS. If you ask any Souls fan, they will tell you- 60FPS matters!

For those who have only discovered FromSoftware with more recent releases, such as Seikro and Bloodborne, this is the perfect way to experience Miyazaki’s first Souls title.

Tales of Arise

Tales of Arise is a lengthy action RPG and a soft reboot of the beloved Tales Series. It is set in both the medieval world of Dahna and the advanced world of Rena. Featuring many characters, this action RPG sees players exploring a beautiful world and engaging in many combat encounters. It has received positive acclaim since being released last month by gaining a Metacritic score of 87.

As an honourable mention, many of the Tales developers worked on SCARLET NEXUS. This game just missed a spot on this list. This action RPG is set in a Brainpunk world, so, if you are looking for a more modern setting this may be for you.

Yakuza: Like a Dragon

When it came to creating a game after the Kiryu saga of the Yakuza Series, Ryo Ga Gotoku Studio decided to create a sequel that ditches the series traditional action beat ’em up gameplay in favour of being an old-school RPG. Set in the backdrop of modern-day Yokohama in Kyoto, Japan, Yakuza: Like a Dragon took a bold risk by changing the genre of their long-standing series. It mostly paid off as it features cracking combat and a story with cinematic artistry that the series is known for.

Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade

Square Enix beloved Final Fantasy VII was remade last year to a strong reception from fans and critics alike. If you haven’t gotten a chance to play it yet, the PS5 edition is the definitive way to play. It includes both a performance and visual mode to choose between 4K graphics or playing at a crispy 60fps.

The game also features a new side story, Episode INTERmission, which shines a light on some of the events on the main game from a different perspective. Yuffie, who was yet to appear in the Remake, is the new protagonist and she plays very differently from the characters in the main game. There are a lot of difficult challenges for people who mastered the original release, as well as an ending that very much teases the inevitable sequel. Disco Elysium- The Final Cut

Disco Elysium was released back in 2019 on PC, but this new Final Cut is the first time this RPG is available on consoles. You play as a detective in the realist world of Elysium, filled with politics, drugs, and violence. Unlike other RPGs, this game features no combat and instead, events are resolved through dialogue trees. Your character develops based on your choices and because of this, it is very much a role-playing game in the truest sense of the phrase. The writing is superb and is sure to put a smile on anyone wanting a gritty narrative-driven adventure.
