3 New Books Like The Girl on the Train

Add this to the ever-growing list of books with effed-up relationships—because, how else would you describe Grace, whose secret husband and secret lover are jailed for an art heist she orchestrated—and unreliable narrators (thanks to Grace's whole multiple-identity schtick). But despite those sweeping characteristics, nothing about Scherm's debut novel feels done before, except, of course, the feelings of nail-biting suspense and page-turning curiosity.

Hausfrau by Jill Alexander Essbaum

OK, technically, this one comes out tomorrow, but you've got two other books to tide you over until then. Fueling this haunting debut novel is not a crime but a marriage (or, more specifically, a wife): American Anna Benz has her perfect Swiss banker husband and her perfect three children in the perfect suburb of Zurich—but her emotional psyche is falling apart (a void that she tries to fill with numerous betrayals and infidelities). Ignore any and all comparisons to Fifty Shades—Nessbaum's book is racy, flawed, and beautifully written (no offense, E.L. James). In other words, stop what you're doing and email your book club, stat.
